What is on the Back?

If you walk around the wall, you can see O’Keeffe’s brightly-colored, unfinished abstract painting from the early 1920s on the verso, or the backside, of the canvas.  Whatever her reasons were for abandoning the earlier abstraction, she picked up the canvas almost 10 years later to complete Jawbone and Fungus, a painting radically different in mood.
