In his thirty-three year career teaching at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop, Fritz Trautmann inspired generations of Rochester artists. He believed an artist’s relationship to color was as metaphysical as it was physical; only by mastering color and the painter’s palette could an artist tune into nature and maximize moments of artistic inspiration.
In 1942 he painted Galaxy to teach his theories to students. MAG purchased the painting from the artist in 1956. It has been a visitor favorite ever since.
