The Supreme Light

As the sun god, Surya rules as king of all the planets, and rides across the sky on a chariot pulled by seven horses. His radiant light and heat cause the cycle of night and day and the seasons, and support all life on earth. Believers offer Surya daily prayers at sunrise.

The most common Hindu festival dedicated to Surya takes place on January 14th or 15th. It is a celebration of the harvest and the Winter Solstice, where people thank Surya for ensuring them a good crop and dedicate the first grain to him.
