Rochester History of the Cigar Store Indian

In 1941, when the Gallery and the Rochester Historical Society collaborated on an exhibition of Folk Art of Rochester & the Genesee Valley, this Cigar Store Indian was included.  The figure had long been a fixture in a cigar store in the United States Hotel on West Main Street, first home to the University of Rochester.  Articles in local papers from the 1920s to the 1940s described this statue as the last of its kind in Rochester.  In a 1949 article, the statue was described as more than 70 years old.
