Poets Walk: "tendrils flying"
Location on Poets Walk Map: 18
Protest by Jocelyn Macy Sloan
There is too much pruning, too much grafting,
creating an undiversified world,
where the stray, unpredictable sprout is forbidden,
the whimsical tendril has been curbed.
I love best our sweet stunted berry
that stained our lips in summer's fields,
the tiny peas growing in childhood's garden,
the floods of wild roses on country roads.
I loved best the incredible people
who once so gaily refused the mold,
but marched as God made them,
with their untrimmed tendrils flying
and their foolish sprouts all sprouting.
