Master of the Holy Blood

MAG’s painting of the Adoration of the Magi is not signed.  In order to identify the artist, scholars closely examined MAG's painting, looking for similar details in other paintings.

Based on their findings, experts attribute this painting to a Flemish artist they call the Master of the Holy Blood (active early 1500s). The name comes from a well-known triptych  (TRIP-tik), or three-panel painting, pictured above.  It was created in about 1510 to 1520 by this same artist for the Brotherhood of the Holy Blood in Bruges (now in modern Belgium).
