MAG's First Tapestry

Purchased especially for the inaugural exhibition of the Gallery’s 1926 addition, it was the first tapestry to enter the museum’s collection. Its popularity led to the purchase of other major medieval and Renaissance tapestries during the following decades.

In 2003, MAG began the European Tapestry Initiative to conserve several Renaissance tapestries.  Battle of the Animals was treated in 2011-2012 at the Textile conservation Laboratory at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
