This painting’s original home was a stairway landing leading to the balcony of the Eastman Theatre. Its placement on an exterior wall meant it was subject to variations in temperature and humidity, and by the 1990s it was in precarious condition.
After an assessment by a paintings conservator, it was painstakingly removed from its niche and restored. Rather than return it to its stairway landing, the acting director of the Eastman School of Music placed it at MAG, where its environment could be better controlled and it could continue to be enjoyed by local art and music lovers. A full-sized photographic reproduction now hangs in its old home at the Eastman Theatre.
