John Henry Twachtman

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, John Henry Twachtman (1853–1902) began his career painting decorative window shades.  He studied with Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati, Munich, and later Venice, where he also studied with William Merritt Chase.  By the time he was 30, Twachtman was studying at the Académie Julian in Paris.

He returned to the United States in 1885, and settled near Greenwich, Connecticut. Twachtman painted some of his finest landscapes from this rural spot.
