James G. Averell

A portrait of James G. Averell is carved onto the base of Memory.

James George (“J.G.”) Averell was the son of Gallery founder Emily Sibley Watson and her first husband.  J.G. Averell studied architecture at Harvard, as well as on his travels in Europe. His career was tragically short-lived, as he died of typhoid fever at age 26.  His love of art and architecture inspired his mother to found MAG, Rochester's art museum, in his memory.
