Homer's Studio at MAG

Winslow Homer gave The Artist's Studio in an Afternoon Fog to the architect, John Calvin Stevens, in payment for his work converting the Homer family carriage house into the artist’s studio.  Homer wrote to Stevens, “…thanking you sincerely, I send you this sketch of mine that I think is appropriate and will please you.”

When Stevens’ granddaughter, Barbara Allen, attended the University of Rochester in the early 1940s, the Memorial Art Gallery purchased the painting from the family.
