Description: Lugné-Poë

In this small painting, the artist Édouard Vuillard (ehd-WAHR vwee-YAHR) attempted to capture not only the visual appearance of his good friend, but the intensity and energy of his character.  Crouched over the edge of a table, shoulders hunched, long fingers coming together on the table surface, this young man’s portrait is a study in fierce concentration. Painted in a somber, narrow range of colors, with little shading or three-dimensional effects, the image becomes flattened, as if created from a series of cut-out and layered shapes.
