Description: Adoration of the Magi

This painting illustrates the visit of the three wise men, or Magi (MAY-jy), to the infant Jesus, as described in the New Testament Gospel of Matthew. At front, Jesus sits on the lap of his mother, the Virgin Mary. Her husband Joseph watches protectively from the right. At left, three richly dressed men approach the family group, carrying a variety of costly gifts. The entire scene appears to take place in an architectural setting, with arched doorways and squared pillars framing the two groups of people.
