Centennial Acquisitions

In honor of 2013, our centennial year, the Memorial Art Gallery added two exciting works of art to the permanent collection: Yayoi Kusama’s Statue of Venus Obliterated by Infinity Nets and Kehinde Wiley’s After Memling’s Portrait of a Man with a Letter. Kusama and Wiley address traditional issues of beauty and form as they confront contemporary concerns about gender, sexuality, class, and race. Both artists pay tribute to the history of art while asserting their place within it. Together these pieces capture the Gallery’s aesthetic vision at this pivotal moment in our history as we reflect upon the last one hundred years and anticipate the next.
