Bringing the Painting Home

MAG’s history is closely connected to the Erie Canal, as it was the Canal that originally generated sufficient prosperity in the region to enable the collecting of art and indeed even the building of the museum.

Therefore, when Harvey’s painting – which had been on loan to MAG exhibitions three times previously  and returned regretfully each time its owner – came up at auction at Sotheby’s, the curator and the director leaped at the chance to bid on it and bring it “home” to Rochester.

Simultaneously, a generous patron, Ed McDonald, had phoned the director with a request – was there a work of art that the Gallery was interested in acquiring, because he would like to help with that.  Armed with this added financial support, the Gallery bid successfully by phone on May 18, 2005, and won the painting back for Rochester.
