Arched Altarpiece

Together the painted images and their five-part archway form an altarpiece, a work of religious art placed at the front of a Christian church, facing the worshipers. The altarpiece is generally placed above and behind the altar, a table or cabinet that serves as the focus of Christian religious ritual.

Several separate but related paintings created early altarpieces, while later ones might be a single large-scale work of art.
