Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is considered one of Germany’s greatest artists. Son of a goldsmith, he completed an apprenticeship with his father before deciding that he wanted to be a painter. He then apprenticed with Michael Wolgemut, and learned the basics of draughtsmanship & painting technique. There followed a wildly successful career. He is known for his paintings, drawings and for his superlative technique in printmaking: woodblock printing, engraving and etching. Knight, Death and the Devil is considered one of Dürer’s three Master Engravings.
