About Knight, Death and the Devil

An early addition to MAG’s permanent collection, this copper engraving was one of Emily Sibley Watson’s first gifts of art to the museum that she founded in memory of her son, James G. Averell. Dürer’s masterful print was in Averell’s collection, one of a group that he purchased from a print dealer’s shop on the Via Condotti in Rome in 1904, the year he died.
