A View From the Harbor

Unknown Artist, A Southeast Prospect of the City of New York, ca. 1756-61, NYHS

This horn is carved with a view of lower Manhattan from the New York City harbor.  Closely-built Dutch-style houses and buildings topped with rooster- and fish-shaped weathervanes occupy much of the surface.  The British coat of arms from the period figures prominently as well, suggesting the owner was an American colonial or British soldier.  Presumably this view was carved on board a ship in the harbor as the soldier whiled away idle hours.
